Nice to meet you. My name’s Matthew and I’m a writer based in Los Angeles (but bred, proudly, in New Jersey). You may have seen my work in Atlas Obscura, TIMEThe Atlantic, The Jewish Daily Forward, NME, The Seattle Times, Guitar magazine, Consequence of Sound, U.S. News & World Report, Mother JonesCityLab, or various other outlets. I can also be heard discussing my work on NPR’s All Things Considered.

I’ve written about the politics of facial hair, banned books and the secret lives of libraries, climate change, diseases you never knew existed, prehistoric drug use, Pearl Jam, and much, much more. I write about history, food, literary culture, travel, science, music, cemeteries—and often several at once. I also review new albums.

Send me a tip, question, or assignment—or just say hi! I’d love to hear from you.
